I am running Linux Kernel 2.2.18 which is upgraded from from RedHat 6.2 kernel 2.2.14 using standard kernel patches from kernel.org. I am running Samba 2.0.7 from RedHAT 6.2 upgrade/addendums. When I get more then one connection smbd will die and log.smb will read this - [2001/03/23 06:12:19, 0] locking/shmem_sysv.c:sysv_shm_open(667) - Can't create or use IPC area. Error was File exists - [2001/03/23 06:12:20, 0] locking/locking.c:locking_init(174) - ERROR: Failed to initialise share modes I have gone through the archive on this mailing list and have seen quite a few people with this problem which would lead me to believe that there should be a solution for it in a FAQ somewhere but I can't find anything at all on that subject. If anyone has a solution to this problem that doesn't deal with having patched the kernel, or running Mandrake please post it because I am pulling my hair out. -- Craig Manske <cmanske@stanektool.com> IS Manager Stanek Tool Corp. <http://www.stanektool.com> New Berlin, WI
We've started having these intermittent problems with our samba 2.0.6 installation. About a dozen people on WinNT client machines are using a Dell file server, running Redhat 6.2. They installation has been purring along with no problems for about six months. About two weeks ago, we started finding that some people, when the log into their NT boxes, are mapping some shares, but not others. Other people are having no problems mapping their shares at certain times, yet experiencing problems at other times. People are sometimes mapping some shares that they do not map at other times. The log.smb shows many "Gethostbyaddr failed" and "Denied connection." We have not made any changes to our samba files on the Linux box. Can anyone suggest where I should start looking to figure out why this is suddenly happening? -- Gary Nielson gary@garynielson.com
Hi Craig, Try the following; bring down samba, then use ipcrm to remove the shared memory and semaphores associated with it. Then log in as root (don' su to root, actually LOG IN as root), and start samba again. I have seen similar problems when someone started samba after su'ing to root from a normal user... Hope this helps, Don -----Original Message----- From: Craig Manske [mailto:cmanske@stanektool.com] Sent: Friday, March 23, 2001 10:28 AM To: Samba Discussions (E-mail) Subject: IPC shared memory problem I am running Linux Kernel 2.2.18 which is upgraded from from RedHat 6.2 kernel 2.2.14 using standard kernel patches from kernel.org.
