Sometimes this is a name resolving issue, too. My Samba configuration was
such that the server was going to DNS first every time it wanted to look up
a name, *then* going to the WINS server. I reversed that and it sped things
up a bit.

Your local net browser probably doesn't have 'browse' access to your
samba
server. You should give it the ability to browse the share anonymously. I
don't know what you exactly need to do (maybe guest ok = yes is enough), but
I'm sure the samba docs cover this topic.
