please reply to me directly and i'll summarise answers to the list (i wish people would make a habit of this - it would help reduce the volume on this list and make searching for answers easier). samba server running samba-2.0.6 windows nt 4 + sp6 running ms word 97 i have a share on the samba server defined as: [sharename] path = /some/path valid users = @somegroup write list = @somegroup force group = somegroup create mask = 0770 directory mask = 0770 people in group somegroup are writing shared word documents in this share. ownerships and permissions seems to be working fine. new documents can be created. however, some of the users regularly experience problems opening or re-saving documents. often they have to re-save a document with a new name, and then replace the old document with the new using using a file manager of unix shell. but sometimes this creates further problems and when they subsequently open the same document it is opened as read-only. questions: any ideas about the cause of these problems? are other people having problems with word 97 and samba servers? would i be better of with a newer version of word? are there any patches or service packs for word 97 that fix problems, particularly problems when using samba servers? are there any critical patches for samba-2.0.6 that may help with this problem? i use a global deadtime=1 setting. would this possibly be a source of these problems? -- Todd Pfaff \ Email: pfaff@mcmaster.ca Computing and Information Services \ Voice: (905) 525-9140 x22920 ABB 132 \ FAX: (905) 528-3773 McMaster University \ Hamilton, Ontario, Canada L8S 4M1 \
