Thanks to all the people who responded. I ended up upgrading my version of
gcc from 2.7.2 to 2.8.1 and this fixed my problem.

As to how to find out what's wrong. look in the source directory. There
is a file called config.log. It will tell you in gory detail all of the
tests it has run and show you what line in the config shell script they ran
from. Look there and see exactly what test failed. I have a suspicion
that you have a path problem and it could not find the locking routines.
