Ok, I can see all machines again, i made a mistake in smb.conf. But i still do not understand what is going on with the password prompt without a specified username? Does samba use my machine name as user name? Everything seems to be setup fine. smbclient test gives expected results... But to access from Network neighborhood on windows, i get user name prompt, as well as when I do a : net time \\servername error 86 : the specified network password is incorrect..... please respond to this address thanks ken

There is no way that you can make Win9x clients to enter a username when every time you try to connect to the \\sambasrv. ayu
