Is there a GUI or other interactive configuation tool for samba
available?

If not, is anyone working on one?

If not, I would like to work on something like that.  I just didn't want
to reinvent something someone else has done or started on.

Yes, there are a number of projects. Look at www.webmin.com, and at the
samba Web site, for starters.
