Hi. I've had no replies but solved it. The solution should probably go into the diag, gotchas or the new doc as it is a simple one to occur but harder to debug. It was a simple case of having set "case sensitive = yes". The addition to the doc would be along the lines: Connecting to the server and service is correct and traversal of the directories works with smbclient on the server but an error message of 'folder does not exist' occurs check for "case sensitive = yes" being set.
