samba - Jan 1998 - net use takes a long time

I have been using Samba 1.9.17 for a couple of months, connecting across the
Internet.  I find that connections take a very long time to establish, 2
minutes.

This does not sound right to me, is there something which the SCO host to be
told about to improve such a disastrous delay ?

using what speed access?  3k per second?  1k per second?  isdn or 28k
modem?
