I've done some more testing and found that the "lpq" permission problem is NOT the cause (I modified so it had global permissions). I'm still in the boat that all my NT systems (not sure about '95) cannot make any new connections to printers. They consistently get a "printer name is invalid". Existing connections work OK. If I drop a good connection I cannot remake it (same message). Anybody got a clue as to what is going on? I've attached a TCPDUMP of the transaction and it does not indicate any problems (i.e. no errors). 14:21:52.923076 mblack.csihq.com.3373 > picard.csihq.com.netbios-ssn: P 520316506:520316589(83) ack 2675807502 win 7319>>> NBT PacketNBT Session Packet Flags=0x0 Length=79 SMB PACKET: SMBopenX (REQUEST) SMB Command = 0x2D Error class = 0x0 Error code = 0 Flags1 = 0x18 Flags2 = 0x3 Tree ID = 110 Proc ID = 51966 UID = 100 MID = 832 Word Count = 15 smbvwv[]Com2=0xFF Off2=0 Flags=0x1 Mode=0x42 SearchAttrib=HIDDEN SYSTEM DIR AttribTime=Tue Aug 31 07:37:52 1999 OFun=0x1 Size=0 TimeOut=-1 Res=0x0 smbbuf[]Path=\pipe\spoolss (DF) 14:21:52.924220 picard.csihq.com.netbios-ssn > mblack.csihq.com.3373: P 1:40(39) ack 83 win 64240>>> NBT PacketNBT Session Packet Flags=0x0 Length=35 SMB PACKET: SMBopenX (REPLY) SMB Command = 0x2D Error class = 0x2 Error code = 4 Flags1 = 0x88 Flags2 = 0x1 Tree ID = 110 Proc ID = 51966 UID = 100 MID = 832 Word Count = 0 SMBError = ERRSRV - ERRaccess (The requester does not have the necessary access rights within the specified context for the requested function. Mike, I just released Samba 1.9.18p1 which contains a fix for the 'printer name invalid' on NT problem (amongst other fixes - mainly Andrew's oplock bug fix). Please try the new release and let me know if it fixes the problem for you (it does here). Regards, Jeremy Allison Samba Team. -- -------------------------------------------------------- Buying an operating system without source is like buying a self-assembly Space Shuttle with no instructions. --------------------------------------------------------
Greetings, I am a user of an older version of Samba (ver 1.9.15p8) and am wondering if the latest version of Samba allows users on an NT server and not on a Un*x box to logon. i.e. let the NT box do passwords without accounts on the Un*x box? If the answer is no, is this in the future? Thanks!!

It will do this on your version of samba Look at the documentation on "secutiry = server"
