At one time I asked people not to use individual messages because the samba mail server was overloaded and couldn't handle the huge number of mail messages that non-digest mode causes (it would be about 150,000 messages a day if everyone did it). Thanks to a very generous donation from SGI we now have a much more powerful server so this is less of a problem. Andrew

Although remote deliveries are inherently limited by the slowness of DNS and SMTP, qmail overlaps 20 simultaneous deliveries by default, so it zooms quickly through mailing lists. (This is why I finished qmail: I had to get a big mailing list set up.) ==>> Thanks to a very generous donation from SGI we now have a much more > powerful server so this is less of a problem. > > Andrew > >

The machine has handled approximately 1.1 million messages over the last 9 days, most of which were to addresses outside ANU. There is no way that I am going to switch to another MTA. The switch from sendmail to zmailer was very worthwhile, but it was quite a lot of work. Andrew

Digest mode is not usable, because it does not handle MIME (instead if strips MIME headers and does not do decoding). So result is not readable. I may considere again digest mode if server keeps mime -headers and put digest to multipart/digest. (Well. Individual messages is also easier to browse than that digest.) / Kari Hurtta
