i noticed the post about WinDD / NTrigue using NIS. i know that mr nigel williams has ported FreeBSD NIS client code to win32, for use in NISGINA. is there any further work planned on the rest of FreeBSD code, porting the nis server side to win32? does anyone know of a NIS server product for NT? if so, does it integrate with the WINS manager at all? does microsoft have any plans to support NIS / NIS+? luke

I don't know of a single large net that does not have a Unix box hiding somewhere. I've looked at the ypserv from NL (I'm running it) but I have trouble finding Unix+shadowpasswd NIS clients, even under Unix. BTW, I wouldn't mind smbpasswd sharing, under NIS, with SSH.> does microsoft have any plans to support NIS / NIS+?I've been looking too. AFAIK, the last thing MS wants is NIS clients oin Win*. They've purposely built a different network management architectiure in order to lock-in market share. NIS compatibility will blow this strategy right out of the water. Remember, the Gator wants to chew and swallow the Unix server market now that he owns the desk-top. Proprietary PDC functionality is critical to this. I may be wrong, but I only see this happening under extreme duress. _________________________________________________ Roeland M.J. I would think that this would be a replacement for NIS/ NIS+. FYI...nisgina will also run on the Cytrix WinFrame package except for not bringing back a login prompt after a log out. However, the disconnect works correctly. Haven't had a chance to debug the code yet and find out exactly why it hangs here. j- -- ________________________________________________________________________ Gerald ( Jerry ) Carter Engineering Network Services Auburn University jerry@eng.auburn.edu http://www.eng.auburn.edu/users/cartegw "...a hundred billion castaways looking for a home." - Sting "Message in a Bottle" ( 1979 ) ________________________________________________________________________
