rsync - May 2003 - config.status error subs.frag file already exists

When we run configure for rsync 2.5.6 on our Tru64 Unix 5.1A machine we are
getting this error in a loop :

./config.status[478]: /tmp/cs385976-17888/subs.frag: file already exists
