rsync - Sep 2001 - Using rsync to list ftp sites

I can't figure out how to use rsync to list the contents of ftp sites. Some
ftp sites I know have rsync installed, and those I am able to list contents from
using their DNS site name, but not the ip address. I know it is possible to copy
files using rsync between different computers on the internet using for instance
ftp, but how is that done?

Rsync is totally independent of ftp; it cannot use the ftp protocol.  
The only way you can use rsync on "ftp sites" is by the site owners
also installing rsync.
