I can''t even begin to determine why this no longer works. Our office firewall WAS RedHat 6.1 running (amoung other things) sshd2 Our home office is a little network with an Win98 client running a proxy server (Jana2) and a Win98 notebook which is properly configured to find the Internet through the proxy server. The notebook uses Secure Netterm (a rather nice telnet client) which is ssh enabled and which is directed to the proxy server. The proxy server has the same Secure Netterm installed WITHOUT the proxy server settings and connecting directly to the office firewall. This setup has worked very nicely for several months, with BOTH workstations able to connect to the office firewall via ssh. And then last month a decision was taken to upgrade the office system to RedHat 7.2 with Openssh and xinetd (again amoung other things). And NOW from my unchanged home office; the proxy server can connect to the firewall just like before.....but the notebook gives nothing .. nada .. nought..diddly.. (add your own pronouns here) I can find NO REFERENCES IN ANY COMMON LOGS on the office firewall to indicate that an attempt is being made to connect. I have disabled IPChains with the same (non)results. I suspect that xinetd is disallowing the service, but I don''t know how to verify this ... and why would the proxy server connection work properly? Can anyone give me direction. I have RdTFM several times but can''t see a way to log a non-existant service Help me .... please!
Lew, I have little experience with proxy servers but wonder why you want or need one. If it were me, it''d have the internal network on a hub or switch and the notebook and any other systems would all go directly to the gateway/firewall themselves. This may not help much - sorry I can''t help more. Yeah, couldn''t agree more, if it''s an internal network, why the proxies? Basically that''s what I''m running here in my own home, 5 pc''s, a hub, no proxies and my gateway/firewall. Maybe there''s reason to it, Lew. For the proxies of course.. jsen * Richard Troy (rtroy@sciencetools.com) wrote:> > Lew, > > I have little experience with proxy servers but wonder why you want or > need one.
