Red Hat will issue two million shares of common stock in exchange for all outstanding securities of C2Net, valuing the Oakland, Calif.-based company at slightly over $40 million based on Friday''s closing price for Red Hat of $20.0625 per share. However, Red Hat said the final purchase price will be calculated based on the average closing price of its common shares for the seven-day period ending Aug. 16. Red Hat said the deal will allow it add security to its list of Internet infrastructure capabilities that include operating system development, tools and e-commerce. Durham, N.C.-based Red Hat''s version of Linux is the most popular open source operating system for Web servers and sites, according to a Netcraft survey. The company also offers embedded devices, enterprise messaging, and database management products. Shares of Red Hat were $2.9375, or 14.64%, at $22.8750 in early trading on the Nasdaq Stock Market.
