I already have a server running Apache 1.3.9 with quite a few virtual servers
already configured. The system is RedHat 6.0 I have just today purchased a 6.1
package just to get the Secure Web Server CD! (I know I could have just
ordered SWS for 50+ dollars but..) because I wanted to enable the secure web
server option asap. The installation guide says it will create a new
httpsd.conf and save the old httpd.conf to old.rpm. I suppose this is fine but
how can I get all my previously configured web servers over into the newly
created httpsd.conf? Can I just copy all those configs <Virtual
></virtual...>
and stuff them into the new httpsd.conf?
Please advise how one can handle this situation?

I just merged my webs into the new conf file. It works the
same. If you are setting up a secured site, you have to add
some additional information, otherwise, it''s just like
regular apache.
Also, load ALL of the RPM''s when you install, if you have
the disk space. I wanted to add PHP after the fact, and I
wished I had done it during the normal installation. It is
easier to delete than add, in my opinion.

So if certain clients try to connect to my secure server ( redhat 6.1 secure
server ) the child dies with a sig fault 11, the memory is never freed and
the client gets a network error. Seems to happen with Netscape 4.5 or IE 4.
Anyone got any ideas?

Will installing SWS 3.1 replace httpd.conf with a new httpsd.conf? And we will

How would I recall all my preconfiguration (a lot!) from my old httpd.conf?
Thanks.

Cut and paste your virtual hosts from the old file into the new file. It

Does rpm -Uvh secureweb also automatically get rid of the existing
initialization of httpd from rc.d level 3 file and make it httpsd
initialization? So nothing else will be changed except that now it will be
just httpsd.conf?

No, there is no need to run httpd anymore. However, the configuration
file is still called httpd.conf and is located in the same place.
You should have a httpd.conf.rpmsave after installing SWS 3.1. You can
merge in the parts that you still need to your httpd.conf file after
installing.

Actually you will still have an httpd.conf file but it is a symbolic link to
httpsd.conf. Your old httpd.conf will be preserved in httpd.conf.rpmsave but
I''m paranoid and would back it up myself before I did the install.

Before, when I only had regular Apache server, I was monitoring httpd process
and usually after it got started, there was just one daemon (httpd) running.
But now that SWS 3.1 has been installed, I am seeing as many as 8-10 httpsd
processes right after I started (.../init.d/httpsd start)?? Is this normal?
Regards.

Perfectly normal. Five to seven httpsd daemons are started
for improved connection performance. Additional daemons are
created as needed. However, I don''t agree with your
historical observation. Apache has always created a large
number of daemons on startup, unless you specifically change
the number of daemons started. I currently have eleven
executing.

Everything went fine until I was trying to create a "test"
certificate. In the
/etc/httpd/conf directory, the command "make testcert" returned:
"NO RULE: for make testcert, EXITED" error.
I tried just "make" and it returned something telling me to use either
"make
genkey" or "make certreq" BUT no make testcert??
Need some pointers. Thanks!

Really? How old was that? Apache went to multiple server processes
quite some time ago.

Normal and configurable. Look for the block in your configuration
files about "server pool management" and look for these variables.

I think you can figure out what that "StartServers" implies. :-)

Yes, there are a few ways to get a hold of the updated secure server.
If you have purchased ANY previous version of the Secure Web Server,
you are eligible for a free upgrade. See
https://www.redhat.com/commerce/sws_upgrade.html
If you haven''t purchased the Secure Server, but have an older
version of Red Hat Linux, you can purchase the upgrade (I think it
is $49). Please call our Customer Service at 800-454-5502 or
send email to presales@redhat.com to get this upgrade.
Hope that helps,
Hilary

I had the same issue. The Makefile does not have an entry
for testcert, and Redhat had not filed any errata back in
November when I installed.
I ended up getting a test certificate from Verisign.

This is RedHat''s answer from Tech Support... Thought you''d
find it
interesting:
The test certificate generation was removed from the Red Hat 6.1
Professinal Edition due to licensing issues with the encryption, however
you can download a free test certificate from www.thawt.com or
verisign.com (The thawt one lasts 30 days, verisign lasts 24 hours) This
should allow you to use the SSL temporarily until you purchase a full SSL
key.

Actually, now that Thwarte is owned by VeriSign, you can only get a test
cert from VeriSign (www.verisign.com).

Hello,
I hate to address a list with a problem like this without browsing the
archives, but that''s not very easy to do right now (even listserv
archives are not letting me retrieve more that 12 files at a time.)
Anyway, I have just finished setting up a RedHat secureweb-3.1 server
(brand new machine...fresh install) at work and migrated our Virtual
Hosts over from the old installation of Apache 1.3.x (can''t remember
the exact version.) The problem is that the Virtual Hosts are not
working on the new server. I have verified that the httpsd.conf file
is correct and that the nameservers are still working properly (the
main nameserver didn''t even change.) The output from httpsd -S looks
similar enough to another Apache 1.3.9 system that I believe apache is
reading the config file correctly and understanding the vhost config.
Has anyone experienced similar problems, or have any other suggestions
on potential problem areas I could take a closer look at?
Thanks in advance,
Dennis Edmonds

Licensing issues with RSA crypto components? They won''t let you tell
people how to make test certs? I could write a long comment but I
won''t bother.

Well, if you are like me, I forgot to add the appropriate
Listen statements in httpd.conf for the aliased ip''s I use,
AND, I forgot to enable the firewall to allow the aliased
ip''s to get to the server. Once I fixed these items, I was
OK.

Just for clarification, I hope I''m right. I got a test certificate
from
Verisign right after Christmas. It is good for 14 days, not 24 hours.

You can get test and signed certificates from any Certificate Authority
that you choose. The Red Hat Apache/SSL Server documentation covered
VeriSign and Thawte as examples of how to go about getting certificates,
but you can get certificates from other sources. For example, you can get
a free test certificate and you can get non-free signed certificates from
Equifax:

Sent this out over the weekend and got no response. Please help!!!!
So if certain clients try to connect to my secure server ( redhat 6.1 secure
server ) the child dies with a seg fault 11, the memory is never freed and
the client gets a network error. Seems to happen with Netscape 4.5 or IE 4.
Anyone got any ideas ?

We have seen intermittent examples of this, and we are investigating.

I was just wondering if anyone has noticed any big difference in performance
between running just regular RedHat6.1 Apache1.3.9 server and running SWS3.1
Redhat Apache. (I mean if most of the virtual servers on the box are NOT using
secure connection)

Before I got my answer from the RedHat mailing list archives, I just used my
NT/IIS Server to gen ''test'' certificates....

Hello,
Dennis Edmonds.
Have you created log files for every virtual host?
If you do not create a file for log file which you
spell in httpd.conf, apache cannot startup.
crete a text file before you start up Apache.
http -t can not check this error.
but it can be loged in the server''s log file.
Sincerely yours,

Won''t help. At some point in time the memory leak will get you and you
will
have to restart the machine ( takes about a week with my server ). I have a
customer who''s machine does it every time ( power Mac, Netscape 4.7 ).
Should I have her point her browser to the RedHat e-commerce site? Would
that help you troubleshoot? :) Don''t want these customers to leave (
eight
sites up and growing ) so if a solution isn''t found quickly I will have
to
find another way around the problem.

If you stop and start a process (i.e. restart) any memory leaks they may
have are cleared out. A memory leak is when a long living process grows
larger and larger. However, this doesn''t extend beyond the length of
time
the process runs.

Then is the restarting every hour routine an effective band-aid or do you
have a better suggestion?
This has been working for me - server up 16 days no problems that I can
find.

Thanks to everyone for the suggestions. After much stress and hair
pulling yesterday, I finally stumbled onto the problem. I was using
the public IP address of the machine in the NameVirtualHost directive,
instead of the machines actual IP address (this machine is being NATed
to/from a private IP address.) I had misunderstood exactly what kind
of information the server would receive from the client. I had
thought that it would be looking at www.notareal.name and the real IP
address...not just the name.
Lessons learned: NAT can be a real headache ;)
Thanks again,
Dennis Edmonds

*If* you are having problems with the server segfaulting, this would seem
a reasonable solution until we can pin down the exact cause and issue a
real fix.

I have noticed that Red Hats SWS runs slower than Stronghold. I''ve got
SCO/Stronghold running on a P133 and Redhat SWS running on a PIII 500 and
Stronghold''s Secure connections run much faster. When I get some time,
I
want to put Stronghold on Redhat and run some test, but for now I have no
idea why SWS is slower.

Yes, that is what I have noticed too. Could RedHat touch on this a little bit.
I would like to know some underlying reasons. I had regular RedHat Apche
running for a few virtual servers. I just installed SWS last week for very
rare use of secure connection. The virtual servers I have on SWS are not using
any secure connection but they are running noticeably slower than before.
