I have been using RedHat since 95 ver 3.0 and RedHat secure web server for
about a year. Our main production servers are running RH 6.0 and Apache
1.3.6 Our secure server is running RH 5.2 and RH Secure/2.0
On our main server when we were running RH 4.2 (about 2 years ago) we
needed a feature in Apache that was not in the RH version at that time so we
down load and compiled a new version of Apache. From that time on we
have had a problem withe the httpd.conf file. We have upgraded RH several
times since then and are using the RPM distributed version of Apache. The
problem we are having is that we need 2 copies of httpd.conf.
Copy 1
/etc/httpd/conf/httpd.conf
Copy 2
/usr/local/etc/httpd/conf/httpd.conf
both copies must be the same for Apache to work.
How do I get it to only use one copy?
What went rong in the firstplace?
Now for the new issue:
I need to add several modules to Apache running on both RH 6 and RH 5.2,
RH SS2.0.
The modules I need to add are:
mod_log_config
mod_usertrack
mod_php
and others.
How do I add (compile a new version) these with out running into
compatibility issues.
The modules as shipped on RH 6.0 are:
httpd -l
Compiled-in modules:
http_core.c
mod_so.c
The modules as shipped on RH SS/2 are:
httpsd -l
Compiled-in modules:
http_core.c
mod_so.c
mod_ssl.c
Thank You in advance for any help.

Subject: RH 6.0 E-Commerce Edition?
Mime-Version: 1.0

Hello,
Am I missing something here? Have recently installed the subject edition
of RedHat and part of the "Addendum" documentation referred to this
list as
a source of information. Have just completed "RTFM" efforts (232
messages
in /latest for this one) and found nothing specific to the E-Commerce
edition. Is there another RedHat list for the E-Commerce edition or is
this it? I certainly don''t want to ask a bunch of embarrassing
questions
directed to the wrong list! <grin>
TIA,

Oddly enuf, this list seems to have virtually no activity. RedHat ECServer is
on backorder & the listserver is really quiet? Go figure. Anyway,
I''m glad to
get SOMETHING. Welcome Dave!

Well the list is active, there just haven''t been many questions / open
discussions lately. :)
Remember, this list is for discussion of all aspects of the secure web
server, and now with the e-commerce server, anything related to Red
Hat''s
various e-commerce offerings.

I''ll throw something out. I''m new to Unix and Linux. What a

anyone had a problem loading comanche? I loaded the standard ''server

I recenty bought the RH 6.0 ecommerce edition and my ISP is having a heck
of time getting the secure part of the server up and working. They still
haven''t figured it out with many hours logged with red hat suppport all
at
my expense. The non-secure parts works fine, but forget about secure part
working!
Appartenly, my fairly knowledgable ISP has even talked to third highest Red
Hat Tech support guy and even he can''t figure out why their product
doesn''t
work.
Anyone else having similar problems? I would be interested in hearing.
I guess major bugs are to be expected with all products that are a few
weeks old.
My ISP is getting pretty feed up with RHSS and they are thinking of
ditching Red Hat all together and going with Stronghold. I hope they
don''t
since you can''t beat red hats price. But then again if Red hats
product
doesn''t work what are you to do? I guess you sometimes get what you
pay
for, especially when it comes to support.
sorry for being so negative, but I am pretty bummed with this whole red hat
situation.

Exactly what errors do you get? Unfortunately, comanche advertises itself
as working much better than it truly does, and it does have issues. Red
Hat is committed in the future towards making Apache easier to configure,
but it is not a cake walk (otherwise it would be already done...).

Hello - Thanks for the quick response.
I will put you in touch with my ISP via this message being forwarded to
them also. I do not know the details completely of the Red Hat secure
server not working like my ISP does, but they mentioned that it had
something to do with Red Hat not thinking my system was generating a random
enough number when it came to the cert or something. But my ISP even went
out and got some truly random numbers from radio active isotopes or
something, and Red hat still wouldn''t take them. Strange.
My ISP has been in contact with your guys but they haven''t been able to
hammer out a solution and they said that you guys even admitted there
''were
bugs'' in the software which is probaby why it is not working properly.

BTW: This is probably a dumb question but how can I copy and ASCII file to a

Exactly what errors do you get? Unfortunately, comanche advertises itself
as working much better than it truly does, and it does have issues. Red
Hat is committed in the future towards making Apache easier to configure,
but it is not a cake walk (otherwise it would be already done...).

Probably more a question for the general red hat mailing lists, but you
have to use the "mcopy" utility. Simply insert a dos formatted floppy
and
type "mcopy filename a:" just like the good old DOS copy utility.
We''ll have a look into this comanche issue.

Hmm. I hate to say this but I have had almost no problems with SSL
based servers in general (RHSS, IIS, Roxen, StrongHold/etc). If you
read and follow the instructions you should be fine. I will admit
that some areas are poorly documented, but in general it works for me
(TM). One problem I have found with Linux vendors in general (SuSE,
Red Hat, Caldera, etc.) is that they are growing so fast and pursuing
so many things that they tend to forget about details. Until they get
the processes and methods in place they won''t be any better then
say... Microsoft for support.
At least with Linux you have a choice of vendors =) (A REAL choice).
As for calling the product an E-commerce solutions, well, it isn''t.
It''s the first (and small) piece of a larger solution.

Tommorow in my column I''ll be going over SSL and I''d suggest
y''all
read it. Might be helpful.

You can''t beat RH prices but you can''t beat Apache-SSL either,
the open
sourced, freely distributable secure web server.
www.apache-ssl.org for more info. Don''t pay too much for Stronghold.

Not to get off of Red Hat subject too much, but how much does it cost for
Apache-SSL for commerical use?
I went to the web site Apache-SSL site, but couldn''t find a price.

Might look at the Raven SSL module from Covalent
<URL: http://www.covalent.net/raven/ssl/ >. It''s $357, USA and
Canada only
(but I think these are the only countries where licensing SSL is an
issue).

Greetings to all in the list.
I am not a RedHat employee, but I would like to suggest that we better utilize
the subject line. Placing a few meaningful words there makes the archive of
this list infinitely more useful when we need to look back and find one of
those magical answers.

Apache-SSL is free for commercial and noncommerical use as it states near
the top of their website at www.apache-ssl.org. Perhaps RH should
consider bundling it with their North American distributions. Does anyone
know if RH has considered that? Why reinvent the wheel?

Does anyone know what, if any, limits are there on number of virtual hosts
we can create? In all cases below, I would be assigning a unique IP address
to each virtual host, these IP addresses spanning multiple class C address
blocks.
Can I ifconfig eth0:1, eth0:2, etc to my heart''s content, or is it
gonna
barf when I get to eth0:255 or some such number?
As a second issue, is there a pseudo-limit on virtual hosts based upon how
many open files are allowed?
Using Multiple servers on the same ethernet - is it possible to
ifconfig eth0:24 on server 2 if server 1 already has someone on it''s
etho:24?
Can use of multiple servers increase somehow any of the limitations that may
exist in the number of virtual hosts that can be created.
Using Intel P3-450, ASUS P2BLS, 256meg ECC Ram,U2W SCSI 9 gig. RH6.0 Secure
Server''s hardware listed in case this poses some limitation that I
might be
overlooking.
Thanks for any advice/suggestions/pointers.

You can always wait till September 20th, 2000 for the RSA data
patents to expire. I found apache-ssl to be the klunkiest/worst SSL
server of the ones I tried (I''m in canada, so it''s legal. how
silly).
I think I''ll officially start offering my services as a consultant to
help people setup Red Hat Secure server (sounds like a good market to
hit =).

The algorithms employed by SSL are currently under US patent protection,
and are owned by RSA Data Security, Inc. This is one of the motivating
factors behind the original secure web server product.
You cannot use Apache-SSL (legally) in the US in its distributed form.

I wonder what RSA DSI would charge an end user directly for a licence...or
if they''ll do that?

I understand, but what about when the RSA patents expire late next year?

Jared,
Apache-SSL may be free, but then you don''t have a license to legally
use
RSA encryption in the US or Canada where the algorithm is patented. RSA
doesn''t sell licenses to individuals, just companies like redhat who
hope
to make enough in sales to cover the cost of the license. If you''re
outside
north america you may not have to worry about it, but if you''re not
though,
you do.
And in response to Kurt - what do you think RH Secure Server uses?
Apache-SSL! In fact, from what I remember Preston saying, the new version
will allow you to drop in an updated apache-ssl module unlike the older
version (correct me if I''m wrong on this please Preston).
In fact, stronghold is even based on Apache-SSL (at least the first
versions were).

Thank you for the clarification, now what I am interested in is the time
after the RSA patents are set to expire and what that means for
the Apache-SSL people and RH Secure Web Server/E-Commerce Server product
line.

The RSA licenses are... expensive. And there is a lot of legal
paperwork/etc since this is classified as a munition, which implies
federal "pound me in the ass" prison (sorry, just saw office space)
if you screw up and sell it to some nasty non-North American.

Yes but it comes in a nice bowtied package and you type in ./install
and you don''t fight with it at all. Strangely enough this is why I
purchased it instead of using one of the free ones (free is nice, but
5 hours of my time is not free to me). But we are getting way way off
topic here.
> In fact, stronghold is even based on Apache-SSL (at least the first

A whole lot of SSL based server are based off of apache/etc, since it
is perfectly legal to do this in the free world (well all of it but
the USA ;).
Back onto topic I''ll be upgrading to RedHat Secure Server 3.0 soon,
and I''ll write an article on it providing solutions to any
pitfalls/etc I find (heck, I get paid to do stuff like this).
FWIW the RSA patents expire on September 20, 2000, I expect to see a
LOT of software suddenly using RSA a few minutes after midnight. Out
of curiosity does this mean Red Hat will not have to pay licensing
fees for the RSA in Secure Server? And or can I then use my one copy
multiple places? It''ll be interesting to see what happens.

I belive there use to be some limitation in some of the older Linux kernels.
If I''m not mistaken, that has been taken care of.. THe only limitation
I see
would be the standard limitations to most everything.. Actual hardware
limitation (spcifically the NIC) and memory.

File descriptors. Yes.

More servers would eat up more memory and file descriptors. So yes, I
suppose so but it probably wouldn''t be a difference that would really
matter
in the big picture.

I think you''re good to go there for quite a while. That''s a

This is slightly incorrect. The latest secure web server packages use
mod_ssl, which itself evolved from Apache-SSL. You cannot "drop in"
another mod_ssl module because it will not include the licensed RSA
routines.

Maybe this question was pretty vague - I''m trying to determine if there
is a
finite # of eth0:1 through eth0:9999999, and if each use of a eth0:somenumber
needs to be unique for the entire ethernet.
If I have this entry in rc.local on server 1 for www.domain1.com at
207.211.187.24
/sbin/ifconfig eth0:24 207.211.187.24 netmask 255.255.255.255 broadcast
207.211.187.255
Can I have THIS entry in server 2 for www.domain2.com at 207.211.187.98
/sbin/ifconfig eth0:24 207.211.187.98 netmask 255.255.255.255 broadcast
207.211.187.255
Both servers on same ethernet.

I don''t know if there really is a limit except that when I was
running on SCO, I started having strange problems after about 32 ip''s
on a single NIC. I''ve since gone to name-based virtual host on both
my SCO and Linux servers. It''s much easier to administer anyway.
Look at http://www.apache.org/docs/vhosts/index.html

Oh ok, I thought you were saying on the same Ethernet card (NIC).
You''re
meaning the same network aren''t you.
Yes, you could have that on two different machines, no problem there. The
aliasing is done on the machine, not the network. Just because an IP is an
alias on one of your machines means nothing really to the outside world,
it''s treated like any other.
Aliases are per-interface too, not just per machine. You could in theory
have 4 Ethernet cards in one machine and alias 1000 IPs to each of them..
Every interface would have an alias 1, 2, 3, and so on.. There wouldn''t
be
any problem there.
The most I''ve ever had on a single interface would have probably been
about
200. But I had absolutely no trouble with it at that (small) number..
To my knowledge there is no limit to the number of aliases you can have as
such. If there is, I''m sure it''s a very, very big number.

I called RSA once to ask about getting a license so I could use apache w/ SSL.
The sales person wanted to sell me their SSL/C product and started talking about
royalties, etc. They did not seem to understand that I just wanted a license so
I could use RSA legally on ONE web server. I just said thanks, but no thanks,
and bought the Mandrake Linux Secure Server.
BTW, I couldn''t get Mandrake secure server to work properly
(documentation was
horrible). So, I just downloaded Apache-SSL, compiled, installed, configured,
no problem. I figure since I bought Mandrake (which came with a license for
RSA), I am covered by extension... (Probably not true ;)

I wonder what RSA DSI would charge an end user directly for a licence...or

I believe Macmillan sells it at local stores such as Best Buy around the
Baltimore, MD area. I bought their "unofficial" RedHat releases and
a "Linux Utilities" package before and I wouldn''t recommend

If I understand the question "Using Multiple servers on the same
ethernet..."
The eth0:x is a logical designator specific to each machine. Therefore,
yes, server 1 and server 2 can each have an eth0:24, assuming of course that
they each have unique IP addresses.

Subject: virtual host limitations
