Wouldn''t the groups be more useful to everyone if Google would stop supporting the newsgroup spammers? Why is Google giving them free advertising when Google''s own business is supposed to be based on non- free advertising? Google thinks they have a way to compete with free? Does Google just want to confuse their own legitimate ads with the various scams the spammers are pushing? Hey Google. The spammers are EVIL. Why are you helping them? How about if Google immediately and automatically hides the spam as soon as a credible "Report this message" complaint arrives? Then someone at Google can check at their leisure. If you agree with this idea, or if you have a better one, I urge you to talk to Google. Maybe if a lot of us encourage Google to do better, then we will help make the Internet more valuable for all of us. --~--~---------~--~----~------------~-------~--~----~ You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "Ruby on Rails: Spinoffs" group. It''s the word "credible" in your comment that''s the problem, I suspect. :-) They probably get hundreds of thousands of "spam" reports a day, and I''m sure they don''t have the staff to look at them all. What we as users can do -- and I generally do -- is use that "report this message" feature rigorously to report spam messages. Because although they can''t possibly have the human staff to look at things, if they get a sufficient volume of reports on a given message, who knows, perhaps an automated system might kick in (or at least put it in front of a human). Someone once told me that Google completely ignores those. If so, well, it''s an exercise in futile optimism... :-) -- T.J. What has worked wonders over on rubyonrails-talk is turning on the ''first message from a member must be approved feature'' and then banning anyone who sends spam. It does require that someone (ie me for rubyonrails-talk) have a look at the pending messages thing a few times a day but it''s not really a big deal. I turned that on some time in April and since then hardly any spam makes it to people''s inboxes. The thing that confuses me is that google groups does have a spam filter - every now and again a message will be queued for approval because google thinks it is spam, however every single time it has been a false positive; google has never flagged as spam even the most blatant messages. On the other hand the gmail spam filter is pretty good. Fred Fred> -- > T.J. I have written to the owners of this group about this topic and have never had a response. I don''t think the creators of this group are even here anymore, so no one would be able to act as moderators. :( On May 26, 5:53 am, Frederick Cheung <frederick.che...-Re5JQEeQqe8AvxtiuMwx3w@public.gmane.org> wrote:> On May 25, 9:26 am, "T.J.
