This question comes up about every month or so. The short of it is:
there is no better library, universally speaking. There''s a better
library *per need* or *per project*. Just like programming languages,
for instance.
The consensus on needs seems to be that jQuery is better suited to
websites that need some spice, while Prototype is more apt for actual
webapps.
I don''t really know about *that*, but on another note, I sure believe
Prototype is way more *cohesive* than jQuery: its API is very
consistent, homogeneous, and therefore "discoverable" or
"guessable"
once you get the basics rights. It tries very hard to honor POLS, while
I feel that jQuery is more of a slapdash of features that are very, very
cool but can''t quite be guessed at, especially from a syntactic
perspective.
Also, you''ve got to consider which lib has you spew code that better
suits your own sense of aesthetics, which is, again, syntax-related.
Aside from this, I''ll stress again that Prototype Core is enjoying a
very, very good relationship with John Resig, who''s doing a tremendous
job on jQuery and JS thinking/patterns in general. All of us JS Lib
players are always getting inspired by each other''s latest cool ideas,
and push this whole domain forward. It''s OSS at its best :-)
