Hosting prototype on a speedy network?
I was reading through ajaxian.com this morning, and came across this: http://ajaxian.com/archives/yahoo-announces-hosting-of-yui-libraries-on-their-edge-network In summary, Yahoo is hosting YUI in a fast, consistent place. What this means is that in addition to initial download speed and a convention of where to link to and even compression, in theory any site which links to this location will share the libraries. This reduces the YUI download time for any other sites that use YUI to zero, assuming the user agents are caching javascript files. It makes a lot of sense to me that we should undertake a similar effort for Prototype and script.aculo.us. Create a central public respository on a really fast, redundant network such as amazon or even akamai. Thoughts? Anyone here part of a company that was invested in by Jeff Bezos? I''d say it''s a no brainer that it''s a good idea, the question of course, is at whose expense? I''d never heard of Akamai... but wouldn''t an Amazon EC2 instance be FAR cheaper?... or a few instances configured in a cluster even? A minimal image running all month comes to something like $74/mo if I remember doing those calculations correctly. I''m a web developer at Akamai and it would definitely be the ideal place to host it. We''ve got 20,000+ servers worldwide. I''m in the process of trying to move aspects of our front end development over to AJAX. I''d be happy to try and push this up the chain and see what happens. However, I''m not in a senior position so I have no authority regarding such decisions. That being said, send me any points that might help our case and I''ll see what I can do... Obviously, no promises :) brian campbell :: brian-VDn9/Cc08V9Wk0Htik3J/w@public.gmane.org :: 303.378.5895 :: www.truvisio.com On Feb 26, 2007, at 10:45 AM, pete-oWFMc0dWE16w5LPnMra/2Q@public.gmane.org wrote: I was reading through ajaxian.com this morning, and came across this: http://ajaxian.com/archives/yahoo-announces-hosting-of-yui-libraries- on-their-edge-network In summary, Yahoo is hosting YUI in a fast, consistent place. Oh boy, well how about the fact that prototype+s.a.u are (maybe) the most used js libraries around, and Akamai would garner tremendous press by offering free community hosting of it? Sorta kinda. It Amazon''s EC2 is bounded in network throughput capacity (per instance), and that price assumes no traffic. As throughput/processor requirements increase, Amazon expects you to simply spawn more servers. Going with a solution like Akamai ensures not only complete uptime, but essentially unlimited bandwidth from a local server. That''s the kind of service I''d require if I were to link to libraries on a server I didn''t control. It''d really surprise me if Akamai would spring for it. Although the library size is pretty small (especially min/zipped), it would represent a commitment to host multiple versions over an extended period of time--meaning the release frequency affects how much service they''re offering for free. And, if they were to do this for prototype, I expect they''d be deluged with other OS hosting requests. In addition, I expect their average client (big company) wouldn''t care much whether Akamai hosted an open source project or not. Don''t get me wrong, I think it is a great idea, and would be an incredible coup if Prototype pulls it off. I''m just a bit pessimistic about seeing it happen. hmm, like blogging about how nice akamai is by providing this? :) ideally, having all sorts of prototype and scriptaculous versions available from world-wide distributed, always-on servers? :) best, thomas Am 26.02.2007 um 23:13 schrieb Brian Campbell:> I''m a web developer at Akamai and it would definitely be the ideal > place to host it.
