[R-jobs] JOB: Funded PhD studentship in applied statistics / veterinary epidemiology
JOB: Funded PhD studentship in applied statistics / veterinary epidemiology Do you want to be able to predict something useful in horse racing? A 3.5 year funded PhD position is available at the University of Glasgow (School of Veterinary Medicine), with a tax free stipend starting at ?13,726 per year The long-term aim of this work is to quantify the risk of (fatal) injury for individual horses on entering a race in North America and develop automated start entry risk indicators in conjunction with US Jockey Club software developers, so that horses at particular risk can be identified and the risk of fatal injury reduced. Specific objectives include: 1. Validate previously developed models of fatal injury to examine their predictive ability. 2. Develop and validate new predictive models for horses ending races with Triage (injury) scores of two and above. 3. Develop and validate models of fatal and non-fatal injury (Triage score of two and above) at the level of the race; race meet or season. 4. Identify models with the greatest predictive ability and develop tools, in conjunction with the US Jockey Club to best prioritise individuals in terms of the risk of fatal and non-fatal injury. We are seeking an enthusiastic, independent and lateral thinking student to take on this studentship, to start July/August 2013 (negotiable). Previous experience of statistical analysis is required, knowledge of a programming language such as Python/C/R is preferred. Candidates with an undergraduate or masters degree in any relevant field such as (applied) statistics, engineering, epidemiology, quantitative ecology/biology will be considered. The successful applicant will be working within the Boyd Orr Centre for Population and Ecosystem Health (http://www.gla.ac.uk/boydorr/), so will also be exposed to wider research interests. Informal enquiries for more details/information are welcomed by either: Tim Parkin: tim.parkin at glasgow.ac.uk<mailto:tim.parkin at glasgow.ac.uk> Matt Denwood: matthew.denwood at glasgow.ac.uk<mailto:matthew.denwood at glasgow.ac.uk> Applications (in the form of CV and covering letter) should be emailed to tim.parkin at glasgow.ac.uk<mailto:tim.parkin at glasgow.ac.uk> - closing date is 1st July 2013.
