I have added a couple of what I would like to think are worthwhile features to my addScales package. More important, also a short vignette. While this is part of the lattice graphics ecosystem, have a look at the vignette as it may have ideas that can be adapted/improved on in other graphics paradigms (e.g. ggplot).
