"data" is the name of a function in base R. It is not a good idea to use that as the name of an actual data object (to which the "$" operator is being applied here). It is not clear from what you have provided what variable names you are working with... you are not communicating yet using reproducible examples, so you are depending on our psychic powers to fill in the gaps, which is not likely to work reliably.
