I know of only one package that does not work under R-1.3.0 but does work
under older ones (package hdf5 which was not updated for 1.2.0). That
includes SJava: the information on
http://www.omegahat.org/RSJava/index.html
does not give a version requirement on R. The *binary* there is old, but
there are instructions to build from the sources. If (as I must assume)
you tried and it failed, you need to send a bug report to the Omegahat
project.
Failing that, you can build any earlier version of R from the R sources,
which are on CRAN back to version 0.65 or so.
