R help - Jun 2001 - maps in R: is there a devel. pack. out there!

I recall some work in progress on developing a package to deal with maps in
R (by Dr. Ihaka and a student using PROJ4!).  Is there a development
snapshot that R-users can play with?  Alpha (beta) testers needed?
