You are right, it's not properly documentated,
but has been used "forever", typically as in

    op <- options(......) # previous option settings

    ...
    ...
    ...

    options(op) # reset options

analogously to par().

Patches to <Rsrc>/src/library/base/man/options.Rd are gladly accepted. ;-)
