The above works in R __when__ you additionally say
par(mex = .5) #or something like it, par(mar =...), par(mgp= ...)
in order to ensure that the outer margins do not reduce the plot region to
non-positive extents..
IMHO this is another example of basic design deficiciencies of S graphics
(including R and S-plus)...
