It was pointed out to me in a separate communication from Bill Venables that the S4 as(,) function, instead of the classed( ,) function I previously suggested, might result in a better strategy for developing code that would run in both S3 and S4. (One of my reasons for defining classed in the first place was to help get my code to run in both S3 and S4.) If I understand the previous discussion correctly, putting this function in R base would also result in a speed-up relative to my interpreted code.
