the abbreivated state names given in data(state) contain numerous errors. 
Florida, 
Hawaii, Iowa, Michigan and Nebraska are wrongly abbreviated. 

compare R with S-plus on this.

even not being an American I do remember the official abbrevations,
and yes, R had them wrong {well they came from the other hemisphere..},
and they are now corrected for "R-devel"  aka "R 1.2 to be".

These were the 5 faults and their correction :
