R devel - Jun 1999 - running R on AIX (>= 4.2)

(Was: r-help -- dynload for R on AIX)

Thanks for all the responses.  Let's see:

  - I found the dynload.c posted by Arne (April 99, I believe).  If
    the difference to the current version of dynload.c is too big,
    then the current dynload.c is a better starting point.  Otherwise
    #ifdef's won't be feasible.

  - One problem appears to be the list of exported symbols.  Tcl's
    ldAix can do this job.  It needs a little help, however.

  - I'm unaware of weaknesses or strengths of the compilers shipped
    with AIX.  Any preference for the duo xlc/xlf or cc/f77?  (Yes,
    they look like they're same thing, but NO, they act differently.)

  - Hmm, why did I want to get R on AIX?  Ah, I couldn't get S-plus to
    load the VR library.  It's nice to have the sources...

I don't think you need this anymore - just use -bexapll for the linker.

There is a lot of discussion going on about the new library format in AIX
4.3.x. I have experienced a lot of problems with IBM's compiler duo and
usually use egcs. My impression is that using gcc or egcs might facilitate
porting anyway, since a lot of people compile R with these compilers on
other platforms.

If my memories are right, then the shipping S-Plus for AIX was compiled on
a very old AIX version (3.2.5) with an odd version of the compiler. Thus,
there are some problems with loading object code dynamically.
