While waiting for a "make" to finish this morning, I took down the Sun "Network Programmers Reference Guide" and had a look at their description of the XDR library. Interestingly it looks like it can be plugged into R with very little effort because our saveload code is structured in exactly the right way. So ..., contrary to what I said before, I will have a bash at adding it. It would still be useful to look at the other data formats.
