pkg kde talk - Aug 2010 - towards KDE 4.5?

Hi,

As you might now, KDE 4.5 is being released in 3 days and the Debian
freeze seems not to be close. Last release mail said end of August,
but I would not be surprised if it takes 2-3 weeks more at least.
That would mean we would be about the time 4.5.1 is likely to be out.

So my question is: who is willing to work towards uploading 4.5.0 to 
experimental (or unstable) and then 4.5.1 to unstable?
This needs some general planning of what needs to be done and tell the 
release team about our plans. I am willing to help with this part
and make uploads if needed, but I do not have too much time for the
updating part.

Ack. as long as KDE that ends up in released stable is 4.5.3 or higher 4.5.x 
(preferably). There will surely be time for this, we just need release team 
not to block it.

I would target 4.5.0 to qt-kde.debian.net (early revisions until package names 
stabilize and in order to catch upgrading issues) and experimental (later 
revisions to test how stuff builds). 4.5.1 would go to unstable eventually.

qt4-x11 source package split alone is worth it IMHO. But it''s not us

decides to put or not to put roadblocks for it...

I have already started working and I have most things done in libs,
pimlibs and all of kdebase. However, my time is limited too. I will be
away from home this week and when I come back I need to do some paid
work too, so I don''t expect to be as productive as I was this weekend.
I''ll try to help as much as I can, though.

Regarding the release team, somebody should go ahead and ask them
asap. I''d also like to see kde 4.5.x in squeeze and I am not much
willing to go back to 4.4.5 to fix potential RC bugs.

I really would like to help with kdepim related packaging. Especially with 
kdepim based on akonadi. We''ll see if it will be released with 4.5.x.

Now the next step is mailing the release team, I have voluntered with this
part, but as as you know, I have not been around lately and I need some help 
recollecting information.

The plan is: shipping into the next stable release with KDE 4.5.x where
x is hopefully at least >=2 with Qt 4.7.
The 4.5.0 release is in 2 days and we are far from having packages ready,
so as Modestas pointed, we could ship then wherever we have something
ok for general public at qt-kde.d.n and later upload 4.5.1 directly to the 
archive.
4.5.1 is supposed to be released in the 2nd week of September.

Fabo, do you know when is Qt 4.7 being released? :) I have not idea about
approx dates and we need them if we are about to tell our plans to the
release team. Actually, it might be a good idea to handle this separately?


About KDE 4.5, gkiagia, Modestas: what have you found so far? As I have
understood it, we should have not problems with the soname bumps/additions/
removals (if any) out of KDE (SC).
Also, I know we have one new package neeeded, grantlee, but it is already in 
the archive (thanks to bricks!).

Finally, it is kdepim. The "official" planning currently says they
will skip
4.5.0 and release with 4.5.1 and well, the changes will be big. Should we keep 
4.4.x anyway?

2 will still be too buggy (it always is). I would estimate 1 at the end of 
August (sooner than 1 month), 2 at the end of September, 3 at the end of

Nop, there will definitely be removals and soname bumps out of KDE SC (some 
workspace libs, libkonq5, kdegraphics libs). A couple of packages will need to 
be binNMUed. That''s definitely digikam (maybe new upstream release
even),
kphotoalbum, ktorrent, konq-plugins, kmess, kdiff3, probably a few more.

My vote goes to kdepim 4.4.x stack. kdepim-akonadi will be too fresh and 
untested for stable Debian release.

Kubuntu is staying with kdepim 4.4.x for it''s next release.  I
understand
Fedora is likely to do this as well.  I think there''s roughly a zero
percent
chance of it being ready for a Debian stable release.

We could expect Qt 4.7.0 being released on 1st week of September .
