[Pkg-exim4-users] smarthost-config not working; unrouteable, frozen
Hi List, I''m using a debian 4.0 with the 2.6.24-etchnhalf.1-amd64 kernel and the standard-exim4 package (4.63-17). I had exim4 running on debian 5.0 before, but i had to switch back to 4.0, so i decided to copy the /etc/exim4, but that just didn''t work. So i deleted the /etc/exim4 by hand (that was a bad idea, got me in trouble when reinstalling) and ended up reinstalling all exim4-packages. Unfortunatly, exim4 still won''t work. I get the following errors for every mail: cat /var/log/exim4/mainlog ... 2009-07-13 13:59:52 1MPcee-0001Kb-5A ** office at mediadesign.at: Unrouteable address 2009-07-13 13:59:53 1MQKCH-0001fZ-0K Error while reading message with no usable sender address (R=1MPcee-0001Kb-5A): at least one malformed recipient address: root at ETC_MAILNAME - malformed address: _MAILNAME may not follow root at ETC 2009-07-13 13:59:53 1MPcee-0001Kb-5A Process failed (1) when writing error message to root at ETC_MAILNAME (frozen) 2009-07-13 13:59:53 1MPd2b-0001GE-4x Unfrozen by forced delivery 2009-07-13 13:59:53 1MPd2b-0001GE-4x ** root at localhost: Unrouteable address 2009-07-13 13:59:53 1MQKCH-0001fb-1i Error while reading message with no usable sender address (R=1MPd2b-0001GE-4x): at least one malformed recipient address: root at ETC_MAILNAME - malformed address: _MAILNAME may not follow root at ETC 2009-07-13 13:59:53 1MPd2b-0001GE-4x Process failed (1) when writing error message to root at ETC_MAILNAME (frozen) 2009-07-13 13:59:53 1MPcmG-0001Og-PQ Unfrozen by forced delivery 2009-07-13 13:59:53 1MPcmG-0001Og-PQ ** office at mediadesign.at: Unrouteable address 2009-07-13 13:59:58 1MQKCM-0001fd-8j Error while reading message with no usable sender address (R=1MPcmG-0001Og-PQ): at least one malformed recipient address: root at ETC_MAILNAME - malformed address: _MAILNAME may not follow root at ETC 2009-07-13 13:59:58 1MPcmG-0001Og-PQ Process failed (1) when writing error message to root at ETC_MAILNAME (frozen) ... my configs: pretty simple, i want all mails to be forwarded to a smarthost in my LAN. Configured it with dpkg-reconfigure exim4-config as the howto''s told me (worked perfectly under debian 5.0) the smarthost is up and running, responds to smtp requests. network and dns is up and running Don''t know where to look at. Could there be some old config-files that are still interfering? problems with the internal db because of dirty uninstalling? Any help is greatly appreciated, any additional Info will be provided ASAP. If yes you could simply echange your broken /etc/exim4 with the backup copy and install exim4 from backports.org. If not I would go through the painful reinstall route: dpkg --force-depends --purge exim4-config apt-get install exim4-config cu andreas -- `What a good friend you are to him, Dr. Maturin. His other friends are so grateful to you.'' `I sew his ears on from time to time, sure''

Why would the reinstall route be painful, are there any side-effects? @Ken: nemesis:~# cat /etc/mailname mediadesign.at thanks, Christoph
