[Pkg-exim4-users] Error 530 trying to get SMTP AUTH working with yahoo.com
This is killing me. I am trying to send out email using smarthost, have read all the documentation, followed the instructions, run a million ''update-exim4.config''s and keep getting 530 authentication required. I can telnet to the server (smtp.snet.yahoo.com), enter AUTH LOGIN and send the encrypted strings for userid and password and get in OK. Also, the ''evolution'' client in my Gnome desktop environment works fine with just a couple of configuration options (SMTP server requires authentication, I enter the ID and get prompted once for the password on the first outbound mail, just like in Outlook Express). I can also confirm a good AUTH LOGIN connection with ''swaks'': swaks -a -q AUTH -s smtp.snet.yahoo.com -au <account id> Password: password === Trying smtp.snet.yahoo.com:25... === Connected to smtp.snet.yahoo.com. <- 220 smtp102.sbc.mail.re2.yahoo.com ESMTP -> EHLO EMACH433 <- 250-smtp102.sbc.mail.re2.yahoo.com <- 250-AUTH LOGIN PLAIN XYMCOOKIE <- 250-PIPELINING <- 250 8BITMIME -> AUTH LOGIN <- 334 VXNlcm5hbWU6 -> d2JyYXp6aWVsQHNuZXQubmV0 <- 334 UGFzc3dvcmQ6 -> cmFtczIwMDQ<- 235 ok, go ahead (#2.0.0) -> QUIT <- 221 smtp102.sbc.mail.re2.yahoo.com === Connection closed with remote host. What do I have to do to get this to work? I am at my wit''s end messing around with this. All I want to do is get the exim4 SMTP part to work so I can submit bug reports with ''reportbug''. I feel like I am close but exim4 is not sending out an AUTH command. Wireshark trace shows the ''EHLO'' followed immediately by a ''MAIL FROM''. PLEASE HELP

You thus need to explicitly allow your exim to authenticate over an unencrypted connection. Did you do that?
