OK, Thanks.  I have openssl.  man 
ssl cites "SEE ALSO ... s_client(1)" and 
"man s_client" produces nothing.  Can 
you tell me where to find documentation 
for s-client or what command_opts and 
command_args will help to test the 
tls-on-connect?

man s_client works here on sarge and sid. If not here, google for "man
s_client" and take any of the first hits.
