anyway I''m not so incompetent as to miss that possibility were it
applicable!

The answers are yes, no, and anyway it doesn''t matter since exim is
started from the init scripts (or manually by root).

Actually, it does matter since exim drops its privileges early and
needs to re-exec itself in order to re-gain privileges when they''re
needed. But you of course know that, so excuse me for trying to help.
