Hi, I''ve just had a call for help on another mailing list because:> I wanted exim so did "apt-get install exim" - unaware that it was the > older version at the time. Are you ever going to get rid of Exim3, or at least rename them so the above doesn''t happen? Steven. -- Love your enemies: they''ll go crazy trying to figure out what you''re up to.

We don''t have any saying about what happens. I surely hope that exim 3 will be removed in Debian etch, due for release in late 2006. Actually, exim 3 packages in Debian sarge and later versions say on installation: -------------------------------------- exim 3.x and 4.x ===============This is a package of exim 3.x. This is no longer supported upstream, and only remains in debian to support users with existing exim 3 installations. We strongly reccommend exim 4.x (which is in the exim4 package) for new installations. We suggest users with existing exim 3 installations consider upgrading, particularly if they have fairly simple configurations. -------------------------------------- So, it is just a matter of reading. It''s the same for apache and apache2. Since there is no way to cleanly upgrade exim3 to exim4 without user intervention, we chose to do so for exim as well.> > Actually, exim 3 packages in Debian sarge and later versions say on > > installation: > > > > -------------------------------------- > > exim 3.x and 4.x > > ===============> > This is a package of exim 3.x. When you upgrade woody to sarge, you end up with a new exim 3, and IIRC without warning. Too lazy to verify this. Too lazy to verify this. That must have been it, it''s the only thing that makes sense anyway. Thanks for your help. Hello Marc, Marc Haber, 19.12.2005 (d.m.y):> exim 4 is indeed installed by default for new sarge installs. And that''s good this way.> When you upgrade woody to sarge, you end up with a new exim 3, and > IIRC without warning. Too lazy to verify this.I would propose a renaming of the exim packages for future Debian releases: - get rid of exim3 (or just rename it to "exim3") - rename exim4 packages just to "exim" packages. Moving exim to exim3 and then using a dummy package or something called exim for at least one release would be preferable to ease people in. Phil

Perhaps better to let exim disappear completly, or make it a meta-package. Cheers, Andi -- http://home.arcor.de/andreas-barth/

Not a good idea. Renaming a package is a nightmare. A metapackage would be a better idea. But first let''s see what the apache folks do when apache 1 doesn''t get upstream support any more.
