To safe delete emails, add the following to your ~/.muttrc file. It will copy deleted messages to your Trash folder in IMAP (modify as necessary if you use local spools). 'd' is redefined as "Safe Delete". If you want to permanently delete a message then use 'y' instead: bind index y delete-message bind pager y delete-message folder-hook .
