the authentication doesn't work correctly under linux:

as suggested in your faqs, this is fixed by adding -lcrypt in the
makefile (NB: this doesn't work on the command line w/
"LIBS=-lcrypt",
one has to explicitely change this once the Makefile has been created by
.configure)
now this works great.
