[Bug 3331] New: Issues with man pages
https://bugzilla.mindrot.org/show_bug.cgi?id=3331 Bug ID: 3331 Summary: Issues with man pages Product: Portable OpenSSH Version: 8.4p1 Hardware: Other OS: All Status: NEW Severity: minor Priority: P5 Component: Documentation Assignee: unassigned-bugs at mindrot.org Reporter: debian at helgefjell.de Dear OpenSSH maintainer, the manpage-l10n project maintains a large number of translations of man pages both from a large variety of sources (including OpenSSH) as well for a large variety of target languages. During their work translators notice different possible issues in the original (english) man pages. Sometimes this is a straightforward typo, sometimes a hard to read sentence, sometimes this is a convention not held up and sometimes we simply do not understand the original. We use several distributions as sources and update regularly (at least every 2 month). This means we are fairly recent (some distributions like archlinux also update frequently) but might miss the latest upstream version once in a while, so the error might be already fixed. We apologize and ask you to close the issue immediately if this should be the case, but given the huge volume of projects and the very limited number of volunteers we are not able to double check each and every issue. Secondly we translators see the manpages in the neutral po format, i.e. converted and harmonized, but not the original source (be it man, groff, xml or other). So we cannot provide a true patch (where possible), but only an approximation which you need to convert into your source format. Finally the issues I'm reporting have accumulated over time and are not always discovered by me, so sometimes my description of the problem my be a bit limited - do not hesitate to ask so we can clarify them. I'm now reporting the errors for your project. If future reports should use another channel, please let me know. Man page: sftp.1 Issue: Broken wrapping, everything before "Display" belongs to the command "E<.Op Fl hi> E<.Op Ar path> E<.Xc> Display usage information for the " "filesystem holding the current directory (or E<.Ar path> if specified). This " "works by allocating a socket to listen to E<.Ar port> on the local side, " "optionally bound to the specified E<.Ar bind_address>. It " "assembles a list of one or more fingerprints (as described below) and tries " "to log in with each key, to see if any of them are already installed (of " "course, if you are not using E<.Xr ssh-agent 1> this may result in you being " "repeatedly prompted for pass-phrases). It then assembles a list of those " "that failed to log in, and using ssh, enables logins with those keys on the " "remote server. By default it adds the keys by appending them to the remote " "user's E<.Pa ~/.ssh/authorized_keys> (creating the file, and directory, if " "necessary). It is also capable of detecting if the remote system is a " "NetScreen, and using its E<.Ql set ssh pka-dsa key ...> command instead." Issue: by ssh-ing ? by E<.Xr ssh 1>-ing "If you have already installed keys from one system on a lot of remote hosts, " "and you then create a new key, on a new client machine, say, it can be " "difficult to keep track of which systems on which you've installed the new " "key. One way of dealing with this is to load both the new key and old " "key(s) into your E<.Xr ssh-agent 1>. Load the new key first, without the E<." "Fl c> option, then load one or more old keys into the agent, possibly by ssh-" "ing to the client machine that has that old key, using the E<.Fl A> option " "to allow agent forwarding:" Issue: -i ? It also " "ensures that only the id you intended is installed, rather than all the keys " "that you have in your E<.Xr ssh-agent 1>. Of course, you can specify " "another id, or use the contents of the E<.Xr ssh-agent 1> as you prefer." -- Man page: sshd.8 Issue 1: rlogin and rsh ? Together " "these programs replace rlogin and rsh, and provide secure encrypted " "communications between two untrusted hosts over an insecure network." Issue: /etc/rc is outdated (at least on Linux) "E<.Nm> listens for connections from clients. It is normally started at boot " "from E<.Pa /etc/rc>. It forks a new daemon for each incoming connection. " "The forked daemons handle key exchange, encryption, authentication, command " "execution, and data exchange." Issue: E<.Dq addr,> ? Issue: fork ? E<.Xr fork 2> "Debug mode. The server sends verbose debug output to standard error, and " "does not put itself in the background. The server also will not fork and " "will only process one connection. This option is only intended for " "debugging for the server. Multiple E<.Fl d> options increase the debugging " "level. Maximum is 3." Issue: Last sentence is unclear: One file per algorithm? "Specifies a file from which a host key is read. This option must be given " "if E<.Nm> is not run as root (as the normal host key files are normally not " "readable by anyone but root). The default is E<.Pa /etc/ssh/" "ssh_host_ecdsa_key>, E<.Pa /etc/ssh/ssh_host_ed25519_key> and E<.Pa /etc/ssh/" "ssh_host_rsa_key>. Issue: safety ? security "For safety, it is very important that the directory hierarchy be prevented " "from modification by other processes on the system (especially those outside " "the jail). "Cm no> then the client may authenticate against any service key stored in " "the machine's default store. This facility is provided to assist with " "operation on multi homed machines. The default is E<.Cm yes>." Issue: What is "to explicit localhost addresses"? Is there a verb missing? "Multiple permissions may be specified by separating them with whitespace. " "An argument of E<.Cm any> can be used to remove all restrictions and permit " "any listen requests. An argument of E<.Cm none> can be used to prohibit all " "listen requests. The host name may contain wildcards as described in the " "PATTERNS section in E<.Xr ssh_config 5>. The wildcard E<.Sq *> can also be " "used in place of a port number to allow all ports. By default all port " "forwarding listen requests are permitted. Note that the E<.Cm GatewayPorts> " "option may further restrict which addresses may be listened on. Note also " "that E<.Xr ssh 1> will request a listen host of E<.Dq localhost> if no " "listen host was specifically requested, and this name is treated differently " "to explicit localhost addresses of E<.Dq 127.0.0.1> and E<.Dq ::1>." Issue: Valid options ? Valid settings "Specifies whether E<.Pa ~/.ssh/environment> and E<.Cm environment=> options " "in E<.Pa ~/.ssh/authorized_keys> are processed by E<.Xr sshd 8>. Valid " "options are E<.Cm yes>, E<.Cm no> or a pattern-list specifying which " "environment variable names to accept (for example E<.Qq LANG,LC_*>). The " "default is E<.Cm no>. I missed your initial question. This is not my style. I now selected to put me on the CC list explicitly. Regarding your question: We look at the man pages as they are shipped by distributions, e.g. Debian, Mandriva, Fedora etc. It might be possible (and indeed, it is likely), that they postprocess the pages before shipping. Thus please tell me which parts are not applicable, and I will refrain from reporting for them again (I'll mark them appropriately). It would be great, if you could fix those issues applicable. The man pages start out in OpenBSD and then get synced into OpenSSH Portable with few (but some) modifications. If you can identify problems there then these are the two places we can help with. Once it leaves our hands, distros make additional changes to the man pages, then run them through some kind formatting pipeline that ultimately results in the man and .po pages. These are all outside of our control and visibility, so we do not see these and cannot correlate your reports with anything we could do something with). If you can spot your issue in the OpenBSD man pages (eg https://man.openbsd.org/ssh.1, https://man.openbsd.org/sshd.8 and so forth), or the OpenSSH Portable mdoc files (eg https://github.com/openssh/openssh-portable/blob/master/ssh.1, https://github.com/openssh/openssh-portable/blob/master/sshd.8 etc) then those are things we can help with. If you can't, it's unlikely we will be able to either, and you should report the problem to the distro in which you observed them. -- You are receiving this mail because: You are watching someone on the CC list of the bug. https://bugzilla.mindrot.org/show_bug.cgi?id=3331 --- Comment #5 from Helge Kreutzmann <debian at helgefjell.de> --- I agree that this is an unfortunate situation. I cannot tell (and seriously lack the ressources to investigate) where the individual strings originate from, besides which distribution shipped them. We currently maintain 22 languages and have more than 100 upstream projects and I'm myself the only person propagating these reports. In the past, translators found issues and silently fixed them in their translation. Now we (aka I) try to report them "upstream", so hopefully all users benefit, but due to the sheer volume, thats all I can do. So please see this as a service - if you could browse through the list and review which are applicable to you (and fix those you agree), that would be great. If, additionally, you can tell me which you don't agree and which don't apply to you, then I could mark them appropriately in our sources (and this would be wonderful). If manpages-l10n gets better tooling and/or more ressources in the future, then we can possibly report them to the "right" layer. If future reports > should use another channel, please let me know.I think this means you should report issues you find to the distro in which you find them. In the mean time I'll see what if anything I can glean from your report. -- You are receiving this mail because: You are watching someone on the CC list of the bug. https://bugzilla.mindrot.org/show_bug.cgi?id=3331 --- Comment #7 from Helge Kreutzmann <debian at helgefjell.de> --- I just reviewed the status of the open issues. Some are resolved since reporting, some have not been addressed and the translators found some new ones. Of course, those which you marked "not in our sources" are excluded. I see two possible ways now: a) I report them here as before. You handle those which you can identify and agree to, all the others I mark as "not applicable", so they won't be reported in the future. b) I send all issues to Debian as proxy (which originate via Debian). I would prefer a), but of course if you want b), then I'll do so as well. -- You are receiving this mail because: You are watching the assignee of the bug.
