Hello, I am new to Solaris, actually I am currently migrating from Linux to Solaris and I got a Sunfire V480 server with Ultrasparc III processors. My idea is to use is as a host running OpenSolaris for several virtual machines, linux and solaris mainly. I would like to ask if it''s possible to run Xen on this type of hardware and OpenSolaris as an OS. I tried searching the forums but couldn''t find any useful infomation regarding my question. Thank you for your time! -- This message posted from opensolaris.org

Thanks! -- This message posted from opensolaris.org
LDOMs are sun4v specific. V480 is sun4u, you can run there containers, however, not sure if there is brand linux on SPARC, IMHO no. Please see the virtualization landing page http://docs.sun.com/source/821-0057/ for links to all information sites for LDoms as well as information on all Solaris virtualization technologies. - Penny On 09/21/09 04:40, Florian Manschwetus wrote:> Am 21.09.2009 13:35, schrieb Stoyan Petkov: >> Hello, >> >> I am new to Solaris, actually I am currently migrating from Linux to Solaris and I got a Sunfire V480 server with Ultrasparc III processors. The machine finally arrived but it appears that the Ultrasparc III+ Cu processor will only support solaris zones. LDoms want T-processors to run. Unfortunately, with zone I cannot run a native copy of linux nor any other operating system, just linux apps. VirtualBox, Xen and VMWare are out of the game as well. My only option according to my research is OpenBSD with QEMU. I am not sure if that will work though. Is there anything else I can try? Thanks once again! -- This message posted from opensolaris.org
The only virtualization option I can think of on a v480 is zones, and as an obvious result you are limited to Solaris OS. You can run Solaris 8/9/10 branded zones, but as most sparc linux is best effort (at best), I doubt you will find a "linux" branded zone for SPARC architecture. Your best bet is to get an x86 architecture machine if you want to virtualize x86 OS''s. You can use the v480 (or a pair of them for HA) as NAS servers to store the backend disk images (iscsi or vdisk/NFS) for a group of x86 servers.
