Multibooting OpenSolaris 2008/05 , SNV87, Linuxes on the same box ?
I have SNV87 installed on bare metal and multibooting wth several Linux instances on the same box. I''ve just placed Linux Grubs into their own disk partitions (/boot or /root) and modified /boot/grub/menu.lst on SNV87 instance correspondently. I suspect that attempt to install OpenSolaris 2008/05 on same box will cause MBR to be overwritten by new loader. I would be glad to be wrong about that. This message posted from opensolaris.org

Sun''s partitioner is still retarded and Caiman''s even worse, so yeah :-) Expect it to break things, just reinstall from OpenSolaris B87. James

You can only have one primary Solaris2 partition per disk that will boot, if he has multiple disks with one primary Solaris2 partition per disk, he should be able to make it work. James

OpenSolaris 2008/05 Grub would understand additional entry referencing SNV78 instance on drive 0. Currently there are 2 SATA drives installed ( disks 0,1). 2. When i''ll atach one more it''s going to be disk 2 and OpenSolaris 2008/05 installer must recognize all 3 drives and understand that primary partition for install may be created only on disk 2. (Open)Solaris grub has been modified for UFS support, and it does autoconfiguration, but you should try to see if using root (hdx,x) works, displaying type xy (Solaris UFS) if successful. Explicitly telling each entry where to boot the kernel from will make it work, but as I''ve said you can''t boot multiple Solaris installs from a single disk, therefore three systems, three disks, and some grub entry modification and addition is needed. If you like I''ll try with VMware tonight and reply to this displaying my progress. I have two sata disks, one pendrive, and one external usb disk, but I cannot use my secondary sata disk as this is my file archive, therefore I must test using virtualization.
