Per the current project creation policy[1], I''m requesting endorsement from the Networking and Xen Communities for the following proposed project. Project Name: R-Bridges Project Synopsys: Deliver R-Bridge (IETF TRILL) support on Solaris. Project Purpose (and commentary): This project will introduce R-Bridge support to Solaris, based on the original work by Radia Perlman, and the work now being done in the IETF TRILL working group. The goal is an IS-IS based replacement for Spanning Tree in bridged networks, along with Solaris support for the required bits of infrastructure to make this useful. Key components include at least IS-IS routing (RFC 1142 / ISO DP 10589), Ethernet bridging, and TRILL header processing (draft-ietf-trill-rbridge-protocol), and may include various learning mechanisms (IGMP/PIM) and R-Bridge specific optimizations (ARP/ND). Related projects include Quagga, Ethernet bridge module, Crossbow, and Nemo. If a Solaris wireless AP ever exists, that would likely be involved as well. (Some necessary background: no real work has been done yet. This is still just a very early stage proposal. We''ve noted that Quagga has an ''isisd'', but of unknown maturity, and not usable yet on Solaris. Similarly, there''s a bridging project, but that hasn''t progressed much and the lead seems to be gone. Some of the important early decisions to make include settling on a code base to use for each feature and making those components usable.) (TRILL itself could probably use any IGP, but it specifies IS-IS because it gets closer than the others to an ideal of zero configuration -- in particular, it skips over the interface addressing problem that OSPF has. We likely will need STP support as well, but other components are less clear, and the IETF TRILL work itself is evolving right now.) (Two of the attractive things for this project are getting started early in the protocol design process -- instead of playing catch-up -- and the potential for multiple immediately reusable subcomponents, regardless of the actual deployment of R-Bridges.) Proposed Sponsors: Networking and Xen Participants: Initial set of proposed project leads: James Carlson <james.d.carlson-xsfywfwIY+M@public.gmane.org> [point of contact] Radia Perlman <radia.perlman-xsfywfwIY+M@public.gmane.org> Paul Jakma <paul.jakma-xsfywfwIY+M@public.gmane.org> Other interested participants: please speak up, or join the project list once we have it running. Contributions are obviously quite welcome; there''s a lot of work to be done here.
