I had searched, but I don't know how I missed this. Sorry.
Of course I'll look into this.

Do I understand it right, however, that the apcsmart driver is only for 
serial ports? So my only choice is usbhid-ups, right?

I would not assume that.    It could easily be that there is a device
which logically has a serial port and physically has a USB port, that
presents a usb/serial converter.

You also omitted the dmesg output from plugging it in.
