When I add a new rule with the following command:

ip6tables -t filter -A INPUT -p ipv6-icmp -m icmpv6 -j ACCEPT

... then ip6tables -L will say:

0 0 ACCEPT icmpv6 * * ::/0 ::/0 ipv6-icmp type 0 

The ip6tables manpage says "--icmpv6-type" is optional.
