Hi guys, pretty new to this (couple if days) but do I have this right: Mapstraction v2 does not support OpenStreetmap yet, where as v1 does. It all becomes clear! Why do you load the Google api for an opentreetmap in mapstraction? Which probably expalins why openstreetmap is not yet supported in v2, because the google api has changed to v3, and v2 is deprecated. ________________________________ From: mapstraction-bounces at lists.mapstraction.com [mailto:mapstraction-bounces at lists.mapstraction.com] On Behalf Of Rob Buttrose Sent: Thursday, 24 June 2010 4:09 PM To: mapstraction at lists.mapstraction.com Subject: Re: [Mapstraction] Openstreetmap and v2 It all becomes clear! Hi Rob, you can use openstreetmap in v2 via cloudmade bear in mind openstreetmap.org isn''t designed to serve a significant volume of tiles. If you want to do that you should render and serve your own tiles (for example as opencyclemap does) or use a service like cloudmade. Alternately, you can use OSM it via openlayers A third option, is you can submit a library to use openstreetmap directly. I wouldn''t advise you to use mapstraction v1. it is dead. long live v2. best, Ed 2010/6/24 Rob Buttrose <buttrose at unimelb.edu.au>:> Which probably expalins why openstreetmap is not yet supported in v2, > because the google api has changed to v3, and v2 is deprecated. > ________________________________ > From: mapstraction-bounces at lists.mapstraction.com > [mailto:mapstraction-bounces at lists.mapstraction.com] On Behalf Of Rob > Buttrose > Sent: Thursday, 24 June 2010 4:09 PM > To: mapstraction at lists.mapstraction.com > Subject: Re: [Mapstraction] Openstreetmap and v2 > > It all becomes clear! > > Why do you load the Google api for an opentreetmap in mapstraction? > > In the .js there is this comment > ?// for now, osm is a hack on top of google > > Rob > ________________________________ > From: mapstraction-bounces at lists.mapstraction.com > [mailto:mapstraction-bounces at lists.mapstraction.com] On Behalf Of Rob > Buttrose > Sent: Thursday, 24 June 2010 3:20 PM > To: mapstraction at lists.mapstraction.com > Subject: [Mapstraction] Openstreetmap and v2 > > > Hi guys, > > pretty new to this (couple if days) but do I have this right: > > Mapstraction v2 does not support OpenStreetmap yet, where as v1 does. > > Regards, > > Rob > _______________________________________________ > Mapstraction mailing list > Mapstraction at lists.mapstraction.com > http://lists.mapstraction.com/listinfo.cgi/mapstraction-mapstraction.com > >
OK Thanks Ed. Not quite sure I understand all that, but I go through it slowly. Basically I have to use OSM - that''s where my annotated maps are. I am little confused by this on the home page http://www.mapstraction.com/ "In the future, Mapstraction will also talk to OpenStreetMap for people who want to build maps without restrictions on derived works." which I assume refers to v2. There is a working example under Specific Provider Demos for OSM which is v1. Hi Dylan, is this the authoritative source for mapstraction v2? http://mapstraction.googlecode.com/svn/trunk/source/ I reckon the google3 example here http://mapstraction.googlecode.com/svn/trunk/examples/ does not work. OK Adam So mapstraction uses the google api v2 for OSM. Google api v2 is deprecated so I don''t want to use that. Looks like there is no change here in mapstraction v.2? Is that right? In http://mapstraction.googlecode.com/svn/trunk/source/mxn.openlayers.core. js, I see the openBubble function is not implemented openBubble: function() { // TODO: Add provider code }, ________________________________ From: mapstraction-bounces at lists.mapstraction.com [mailto:mapstraction-bounces at lists.mapstraction.com] On Behalf Of Rob Buttrose Sent: Monday, 28 June 2010 2:49 PM To: mapstraction at lists.mapstraction.com Subject: Re: [Mapstraction] Openstreetmap and v2 I changed the OpenLayers.js to http://openlayers.org/api/OpenLayers.js The intial zoom works but there seems to be a limit on how far you can zoom in after that(unacceptable for my needs). The bubble text on the marker does not work. Grrrr! I got cloudmade to work OK using the web-maps-lite.js. However, when I tried openlayers neither the initial zoom nor my marker code worked. Can I just check with you the Javascript I need here? I have: <script src="http://mapstraction.googlecode.com/svn/trunk/source/mxn.js?(openlay ers)" type="text/javascript"></script> <script src="http://dev.openlayers.org/releases/OpenLayers-2.8/lib/OpenLayers.js " type="text/javascript"></script> and then m=new mxn.Mapstraction(''mapdiv'',''openlayers''); etc, etc. Is that it? Google api v2 is deprecated so I don''t want to use that. Looks like there is no change here in mapstraction v.2? Is that right? OpenLayers also uses OpenStreetMap for it''s basemap. http://mapstraction.appspot.com/#openlayers Between CloudMade or OpenLayers depends on how up to date you want your data. CloudMade will trail behind the official OSM database (OSM can have updated tiles within minutes of an update). And also styling. I should change the OpenStreetMap example to use OpenLayers instead (though it will be duplicative of the OpenLayers demo). I''ve been working happily with this with some modifications, though I have wondered if cloudmade should be the default base layer as it is on the openlayers.org home page.
