Hi, what about setting up a wiki with more info to get started? V2 hast only a google example in svn... The sandbox is cool, but covers not all providers available... So how do I get started using cloudmade? Which javascript from cloudmade do I have to use? Do I need a key or not? How ist the key passed? The abstraction level of mapstraction is cool, but we could make it easyer for people to get started... Maybe I did overlook something? Is it juste me? -- Henrik
Henrik, I completely agree that we need to make it easier for people to get started with Mapstraction, using whichever provider they want. Right now the sandbox has six provider examples, including CloudMade. But a quickstart page (or similar) on mapstraction.com is needed. Since my book (coming in July) uses Mapstraction heavily, I''d like to see mapstraction.com be filled in with content. As such, I want to help with this part of the project. However, I can''t spearhead the effort. Anyone else interested in making the flagship site more newbie friendly? --Adam On Fri, May 28, 2010 at 9:23 AM, Henrik Genssen <henrik.genssen at miadi.net>wrote:> Hi, > > what about setting up a wiki with more info to get started? > V2 hast only a google example in svn... > The sandbox is cool, but covers not all providers available... > > So how do I get started using cloudmade? I won''t have serious time to devote to it until August though BTW - step 1 should be making it clear that v1 is dead. I met a guy at the pub this week who was excited to tell me he had spent all day playing w/ mapstraction. Unfortunately he meant version 1 *sigh*> --Adam > > On Fri, May 28, 2010 at 9:23 AM, Henrik Genssen <henrik.genssen at miadi.net> > wrote: >> >> Hi, >> >> what about setting up a wiki with more info to get started? >> V2 hast only a google example in svn... >> The sandbox is cool, but covers not all providers available... >> >> So how do I get started using cloudmade? I''m willing to help, but am also unable to spearhead. I''d like to see the site run a friendly and flexible CMS platform, so that multiple users can have edit permissions and we can social features to nurture the community. I''m partial to Drupal, but doesn''t really matter. If we choose Drupal, I can definitely help with that. Design and UX would be key. I tink that the Lev idea is cool. Convert the actual mapstraction site in a social web would be great, but I have not enough experience to spearhead the project. Great idea - however in my experience Drupal is full of promise but always difficult to really use. My recommendation is Wordpress. It''s very easy to admin and write pages, layout, links, etc. And there is already a Wordpress plugin that uses Mapstraction ;) geopress And there is already Mapstraction WP site up at http://mapstraction.com/news If this is ok - I can setup accounts for anyone that wants one and we can easily migrate the content over. I just migrated over the front page. Andrew On May 28, 2010, at 1:35 PM, Pablo L?pez Escob?s <plopesc at gmail.com> wrote:> I tink that the Lev idea is cool. I think, it does not make a real difference, what system we use. Only content rules :-) So if you have a wordpress up and running, let''s start using it! regards Henrik>reply to message: >date: 29.05.2010 00:54:05 >from: "Andrew Turner" <ajturner at gmail.com> >to: mapstraction at lists.mapstraction.com >subject: Re: [Mapstraction] a wiki with more help > >Great idea - however in my experience Drupal is full of promise but always difficult to really use. Feel free to ignore the following, and I''ll be happy either way, but I''d be remiss if I didn''t share thoughts on WP vs Drupal since I work with both extensively for my day job ;) I think WP is an amazing blogging platform, and for a site focused on blogging, it''s head and tails the best choice. But once you start adding more features, Drupal makes much more sense. It''s true that Drupal has a very steep learning curve, and for non-experienced users/devs, it often falls flat. But if you know what you''re doing, it''s a amazing powerful and flexible and platform. I think it would have the following advantages in this case: Online community features, E.g., forums, activity streams, topical interest groups, profiles, etc. Granular role base security model Flexible and powerful development platform for map integration, e.g., example library usage, etc. File download system There are actually two Mapstraction modules for Drupal, http://drupal.org/project/mapstraction, which is mine, and http://drupal.org/project/mapstraction_cck, which I believe Pablo is working (Pablo, we should revisit collaboration). I''m happy to lend Drupal expertise if we want to go that route. Aside from design and content, it would mostly be following some best practices for module selection and configuration. Ok, my two cents ... happy either way as I mentioned earlier. I''d prefer to use the Github wiki. I don''t think there''s any point setting up a separate CMS or wiki elsewhere that someone has to take responsibility for hosting and management. Plus it''s advantageous to have all the content right there on the Github project page next to the issues list and release downloads. I''ve been working on some docs around the architecture and how to implement new providers but I agree we could do with some on how to make use of Mapstraction with each provider too. One thing I would say in response to Ed is that v2 isn''t quite there yet - for the major providers it''s complete but there are still a lot of outliers v1 supports with incomplete implementations in v2. I recently updated the issues list in Google Code with how far off these implementations are from being complete. Once we get the Github project synced with SVN and I can move the issues list across to github I''m going to get all these implementations done. That way we can get a full build up for download without people needing to check out the source and build themselves. With any luck my Internet connection will be fixed next week and I can get on with getting this stuff sorted. E-mailing via the phone is one thing but I''m not going to attempt to work with source control using it. At the very least using the existing WordPress for the Mapstraction.org makes it so others can update the website. Right now it actually comes out of the old SVN - but having to deploy code to change wording is not convenient. I don''t think we need a full-on social network around Mapstraction :) Just a place to introduce people, put up a bunch of demos to show it off, then point to the code repo and wiki''s for the nitty-gritty details.> One thing I would say in response to Ed is that v2 isn''t quite there yet - > for the major providers it''s complete but there are still a lot of outliers > v1 supports with incomplete implementations in v2.
