Have you done any searches for lustre on debian? I see some posts to this list about someone using lustre on debian sarge, so that makes me think it might be out there. This should get you closer to where you need to go if ubuntu specific notes aren''t available. Your best bet might be to alien the lustre rpm''s and attempt to start from there. I might have some updated lustre debian packages early next week some time. Thanks, - David Brown
I am also very interested in Lustre on Ubuntu. Ubuntu on amd64 is our standard production platform. [Lustre-discuss] lustre-based architecture for gigathread computation
Hello I have built a runtime architecture on top of Lustre for running programs efficiently using millions to (eventually) billions of compute threads. If you are interested in collaborating or trying out my system please contact me at stein@eecs.harvard.edu Thanks Lex Stein

But i''m unable to change the kernal to lustre during it boot. There no reference to change the boot menu to lustre. Hope you can help me to the next step. Ubuntu on amd64 is our > standard production platform. We did the something along the following line when testing on ubuntu dapper amd64: Grab the 2.6.18 kernel source package from debian etch (and follow the security updates in etch) and install it. Grab svn://alioth.debian.org/svn/pkg-lustre (the svn repo for the debian packages). Do dpkg-buildpackage to get the debs. For the servers: Install the linux-patch-lustre package and build a 2.6.18 lustre patched kernel suitably configured, if I remember correctly you have to pass --added-patches lustre to make-kpkg. I recommend to take the config from a suitable -server ubuntu kernel and use it as baseline config. For servers/clients: Install lustre-modules-source. Use module-assistant to build the lustre-modules package (patchless on dapper 2.6.15 should work due to the one missing patch being applied in the dapper kernel). Install the rest of the needed debs (lustre, perhaps more) and run stuff. This was last tested with 1.5.97 which has 2.6.18-specific patches in the pkg-lustre tree. I don''t know the current state of pkg-lustre since 1.6 was released. I''ve heard rumors of an upcoming lustre 1.6 release that will officially support 2.6.18, we''re waiting for that one. /Nikke -- -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- Niklas Edmundsson, Admin @ {acc,hpc2n}.umu.se | nikke@hpc2n.umu.se --------------------------------------------------------------------------- Don''t let me get too deep. =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=

After I made sure the kernel loaded ok and the modules all worked ok, I aliened the source packages for the kernel and the Lustre source and built it all for Debian using yaird for the new initrd image. Everything loaded fine and it has been working great for weeks now. You could probably just alien the source packages and build from there, there is no patching involved and the SUSE packages give you 2.6.16 vs. 2.6.12. It''s a pretty straight forward build. I''m running 1.4.6.4 in ubuntu 6.06 LTS with vanilla kernel 2.6.12. I have had no problems, but I did compiling myself. Right now I''m going to implement 1.6.1 on the same ubuntu with drbd for the devices on 6 servers, in dual pairs - for failover. If interested I can share my expiriences from this work :) 4 is older Intel, and 2 are amd64 dual cores. Yes, Please! Perhaps even document here: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Servers I will be closely following your notes, as I intend to set up a fault tolerant Lustre configuration on Ubuntu 6.06 LTS 2-3 weeks from now. My configuration will be: * 3 Sun X4200 machines (2x Opteron, 4G mem, dual qlogic FC cards) * 3 one TB SAN volumes (all can see all), but we can re-carve this up if necessary (haven''t decided on Lustre config details yet) If successful, this will be initially used to back a fault tolerant LAMP infrastructure. But may eventually end up being a general purpose fault-tolerant centralized data store. Also, if we are successful with Lustre on Ubuntu, I will be interested in purchasing support. Is support currently available, or a future possibility for Ubuntu? Thanks, -Brian Hans Einar Gautun wrote:> I''m running 1.4.6.4 in ubuntu 6.06 LTS with vanilla kernel 2.6.12.
