After spending this weekend figuring out what went wrong with this, i go the
following line to work:

^\w{3} [ :[:digit:]]{11} [._[:alnum:]-]+ dovecot: pop3-login: Aborted login \(0
authentication attempts\): rip=[.:[:xdigit:]]+, lip=[.:[:xdigit:]]+$

I would suggest that this line should be added to the logcheck-database package
so that people running nagios would not need to see these messages.
