okay the example your cite seems taken from logoutput(), which is called:
logoutput "$file"
saw more unprotected usage of $dir on a quick scan.

what's the special trouble you have?
especially please educate me on the needed use of quotes?

hmm should have better read the subject first.
ok we need to correct that.

which files did you use with spaces?  a rules file?
